  • Denise Winn

    Denise Winn

    Lecturer

    HG.Dip.P, BA (hons)

Denise Winn has been a psychotherapist since 2000, using the human givens approach to therapy. The term human givens refers to the givens of human nature – our essential emotional needs and the innate resources we have to help us fulfil them. It is when needs are not well met in balance or resources are inadvertently being misused that problems with mental health occur.

Human givens is a brief, solution-focused approach, with the emphasis on opening clients up to different, more empowering perspectives to help make their lives work for them again as quickly as possible. This way of looking at behaviour and mental health is not only being successfully applied to counselling distressed people but is increasingly influencing fields as diverse as physical health, parenting, education, social care, business, law, diplomacy – and dentistry. Denise was involved right from when the human givens approach was first developed in the 1990s.

Alongside seeing clients, she is editor of the journal Human Givens and, till recently, taught for Human Givens College. She is the author of numerous books on psychology and mental health for the layperson, was editor of the UK edition of Psychology Today, and wrote about psychology and mental health for many national newspapers and magazines for over 25 years. She currently writes a blog for Psychology Today, called Helping Humanity Thrive.
